Checkatrade review of costs & membership
How Checkatrade UK improved since featuring on Watchdog?
In 2014 Checktrade.com featured on Watchdog review and there has probably been much improvement and they receive lots of good reviews, but since our membership in 2016 we have only been vetted once and asked for our Public Insurance annually, I assumed we would be checked a little more. Its seem to be more of a ‘brand’ that everyone recognises due to the fierce marketing by them. And now HomeServe have brought 60% of Checkatrade for 54m
Is Checkatrade vetting process rigorous enough?
Why do they only ask for the bare minimum i.e. Public Liability, determine what geographical areas you operate, and ask that we gain a certain amount of reviews to get started, even suggesting that we could get reviews of friends and/or family that we have previously worked for.
How does Checkatrade vet you?
We had our Waste Carrier Licence plus other paperwork at the interview but they didn’t ask to see this, which I thought was strange due to the fact that we remove cavity wall insulation and take large volumes of waste away that needs to be disposed of in the proper manner, certainly not to fly tip like some rogue trades.
Why not check for our competence?
The other was our ACOPs Gas Awareness Certificate, for which we need to be qualified to check chimney flues and ventilation before and after cavity insulation has been installed or removed.
Nor did they check our CSCS cards or cavity wall insulation NVQ to see if we were competent in our field.
Now it’s coming up to Extract Insulation renewal date, but we are unsure whether to continue the membership due to the rising monthly costs of £90 plus VAT, but when suggested that we were thinking of leaving them, the costs went down by about £20 plus VAT per month.
It seems lots of customers have heard of, and do use Checkatrade.com, but I’m pretty sure Check a Trade should mean what it says on the tin, checking that trade for the skill and qualification they require, also to check the competence of the tradesman or organisation.
