Types of cavity wall insulation
There are several different types of cavity wall insulation on the market, and the cost and difficulty of removal can vary depending on the type of insulation present in your home.
Removing Blown mineral fibre Insulation
Mineral fibres are rigid, water repellent insulation materials most commonly used in exterior walls. Although they have strong insulating properties, they can cause major issues if incorrectly installed. If the material is blown at the wrong pressure or an incorrect drill pattern is used, homeowners can be left with large cold patches and voids in the wall where heat can escape and damp can sneak in.
Removing Expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads
EPS bead insulation involves blowing thousands of small polystyrene beads into the cavity and using a binding agent or adhesive to bond them together. They are commonly used in more narrow cavity spaces, and are considered more thermally efficient than mineral wool.
Often used in homes that lack standard cavities, foam insulation expands and fills any voids or gaps in your wall on injection. Once installed, foam installation can be very tricky to extract, and requires additional preparation work for successful removal. For this reason, extraction is generally a little more expensive for this insulation type, although as with ESP and Blown Mineral Fibre, Extract Insulation charges by the square meter for best value.
